The atmosphere is ok, but nothing to write home about. The beers however, are worth writing home about. The selection is well above average and they all taste great. It is worth stopping by.

I've got to say this is better than the other two brew-pubs in town. Most people are rating this as the lowest of the three but I and my partner can't agree with this. This place should not be on top, it being in a surburban mall and all, but, sorry, we both think so. The beer and food were great. No hassels parking with a middle American family crowd vs the parking meter paralegals uptown. We both feel more at home uptown but you got to face the facts.

We had the 8 beer sampler, and every single beer was very drinkable. Even the lightest of beers -the kolsch and the "Triple Treat"- were very flavorful. Their cream soda got two thumbs up from our 9 year old. I wish there was a JT Whitney's in my neighborhood.

Beer: I had a smoked hefe-weisen. Didn't taste much of the smoked flavor come through, but was one of the best hefe-weisens. A but darker in color, most likely from the smoked malts. Also I had a dark Kolsch. Good variation of the standard Kolsch. Food: I had a portabela mushroom sandwich, which was the second best I've ever had (this is a good compliment, the best one I can't get anymore because the place closed down). The others in my party had burgers, and they seemed to enjoy them. The fries were great, crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside.

Sat at the bar with me brother. Boring sports bar/family restaurant kind of atmosphere, bad 80s music on the soundsystem. The Old Ale was pretty good, and judging from some of the other stuff they've done (Imperial Stout, Dark Alt, Barley Wine, Smoked), the brewer has talent and creativity; but alas I only saw it in that one example of the 8 I tried. Porter was decent, the rest poor to mediocre. Slow disinterested service. From what I've read, this place has had many ups and downs over the years; perhaps I just caught it at a bad time. I'm sure I'll hit it again, I'm in Madison a couple of times a year at least; but for now it's a distant third to Angelic and Great Dane.

Was in town for a business trip and found a spot at the bar, the bar area was fairly busy, but the restuarant did look as busy. Sitting at the bar tends to give you the best overview of how they handle that business end. The Bartenders were knowledgable of the beers on tap. The Rueben sandwich was very good, but the fries were not as desirable, so I gave food a good.

It's not in the heart of business, college or tourist Madison, but near some interesting used book shopping. Nice touch on the menu: many of the selections can be served "Atkins/Low Carb" style (they toss the bun and add a salad). Go for the Badger Red Ale.

Stopped for lunch when we pulled into Madison. Venue reminded me of an old 60's bar that could use some updating, but we were there for the beer and food. The sampler revealed a nice selection of beers with the Dark Alt and the Rauch standing out. A nice lunch crowd tells me that this place is also a food destination. Looking forward to another visit.

They try hard in everything but the beer, which is very average. Usually not bad, but never great. House flavor is that funky "ale-ness" that many brewpubs get stuck in. Fun place overall, though.
